Quantitative CT: clinical advances and technical challenges

A book chapter on quantitative CT in Biomechanics and Mechanobiology of Bone, by Walle, Matheson and Boyd.

Two vertebral finite element models with applied loading and boundary conditions, coloured by strain magnitude from blue (low) to red (high).

Medical images become useful inputs to mechanical models only when we understand what they measure and where their limitations lie.

Matthias Walle, Bryn E. Matheson, and Steven K. Boyd authored the chapter Clinical advances and technical challenges of quantitative computed tomography in Biomechanics and Mechanobiology of Bone (Elsevier, 2026, pages 589–622).

The chapter complements our CT-based vertebral-strength work and provides a broader quantitative-imaging foundation for the lab's spinal research.
