Bone mechanobiology in diabetes

Investigating whether bone remodelling and responsiveness to mechanical stimuli differ in type 1 diabetes.

Published comparison of bone remodelling and estimated loading in controls and participants with type 1 diabetes.

Why can bone health be impaired even when density does not tell the whole story? This work studies bone remodelling and responsiveness to mechanical stimuli in people with type 1 diabetes.

Longitudinal high-resolution imaging identifies formation and resorption sites. Image-based mechanical models then let us examine how those sites relate to the local mechanical environment.

This application connects disease biology with tissue-level adaptation and builds on Matthias's PhD work on bone health in diabetes, recognised with the ETH Medal.
